第二次世界大戦の西部戦線にてフランスは1922年から構築していたドイツ国境のマジノ要塞とアンデンヌからムーズ川でドイツ軍を防衛していた。1940年5月10日から最西端のラ・フェルテ要塞と中間地点のセダン要塞からドイツ軍が電撃的に侵攻した。要塞は陥落して内部には多数のフランス軍兵士が戦死した遺体が散乱した。その後に一挙に侵攻されて1940年6月14日にはパリが陥落してフランスは崩壊した。
