フランス軍とベトミン(越南独立同盟)とのインドシナ戦争は、1954年5月にディエンビエンフーでフランス軍の完敗で終結した。その後の7月に休戦協定も南北に分断されても、南ベトナム政府軍とベトコン(民族解放戦線)のベトナム戦争が激化して泥沼に入る。政府軍とベトコンとの戦闘は水田地帯にも農村も向かい、農民達は家族や居場所も失い、頭上を飛び交う弾丸を沼地で伏せて避けようとした。
