太平洋戦争の末期にアメリカ軍を主体とする連合国軍はアイスバーク作戦(Operation Iceberg)で沖縄諸島に上陸して、日本軍と沖縄戦争(ウチナー戦, Ucinaaikusa)が1944年3月26日から起こる。琉球王朝の首里城の周囲では特に烈しい戦闘があり、日本軍は死守するも5月19日には全滅し陥落して、多くの日本軍兵士の遺体が散乱して腐敗した。
