第一次世界大戦のヴェルダンの戦いにて、アヴォクールウッドでドイツ軍の砲弾によって、1918年にフランスの少年の死体が木に吹き飛ばされて宙吊りとなった。歴史上で最悪の戦いであるヴェルダンの戦いで、約300日で約30万人が死亡したフレンチフォレストには、約100年経っても何も成長しないほど多くの遺体、ヒ素、不発弾がまだ散らばっている。アヴォクール・ウッドは、フランス、グラン・テスト地域である。
