第2次世界大戦においてイタリア軍は、ドイツ軍の参戦により、ギリシアを侵略から分割して占領した。ギリシア市民の多くは1941年から1942年の冬期にかけて占領軍の蛮行と搾取による経済的な危機により悲劇的な餓死者を出した。特にアテネやそのほかの都市では、食糧の極度の欠乏により、大半の市民が急激な栄養失調となり、約300,000人もの餓死者が散乱した。ギリシア市民は多数の餓死者の死体をトラックに積載して処理した。
