第1次世界大戦は、オーストラリア=ハンガリー帝国が皇太子の暗殺の1ヶ月後の1914年7月28日にセルビア王国に戦線布告して勃発した。 セルビアに対して第一次侵攻する際には、セルビア市民を含めて無差別に虐殺した。さらに東部戦線において8月1日に参戦したドイツ帝国と1915年 10月14日から参戦したブルがニア王国との中央同盟国により、1915年11月5日にはセルビア王国は侵略された。ドイツ帝国軍の捕虜となった多数のセルビア人兵士が、悲惨にも虐殺された。
