太平洋戦争の緒戦において、マッカーサー司令官はフィリピンのマニラ湾に面したコレヒドール島に司令部を配備した。日本軍は1941年5月6日に制圧した。"I shall return"と宣言してオーストラリアに撤退した。コレヒドール島の奪還に執着したアメリカ軍は1945年1月20日から1月28日まで本格的な空海軍による戦闘した。約5,000名の日本軍兵士は断末魔には肉親の名前を叫けびながら完全に壊滅した。生存者はわずかに約9名であった。
