中国の清国にて、1911年から12年にかけて共和国である中華民国に至る辛亥革命が勃発した。武装蜂起に対して、清国軍隊は武漢の漢口等において、革命の関係者を逮捕して捕虜とした。捕虜となった多数の革命の関係者らは斬首等で虐殺された。武漢の漢口地区の租界に居住していた欧州人が、その虐殺の実態を視察した。その直後の10月11日には、清国の新式陸軍の内部にて革命同調者が武漢の武昌地域を占領して、辛亥革命が勃発した。
