太平洋戦争の後期におけるフィリピン戦では、アメリカ軍が1944年10月から1945年8月に日本軍が侵略したフィリピンを奪還した。アメリカ軍の上陸によって日本軍は追い詰められて、ルソン島のバタンガス州のリパ市付近で、多数のフィリピン人住民を無差別に虐殺した。日本軍兵士は1945年4月13日にフィリピン人住民らを後手に縛って銃剣と日本刀で殺戮していた。
