太平洋戦争のニューギニアの戦いにて、アメリカ連合軍はギルワナの戦場で日本軍を追い込んだ。日本軍は緒戦のバザブアとブナでは全滅した。日本軍兵士が1943年1月12日にギルワ地域から撤退して脱出するために、アメリカ連合軍の橋頭堡を強奪を試みた。しかし、強奪できずに失敗して、銃殺されて死体は浮かびながら太平洋にも流れた。
