ユーゴスラビアから独立後の1992年3月3日から1995年10月31日までボスニア・ヘルツェゴビナ紛争が勃発した。2日間の停戦中であった1992年5月27日に、セルビア人勢力からサラエボに砲撃した3発により、中心部のパン屋に買い出したイスラム教のボシュニャク人らの20名が死亡した。食料不足で命がけの買い出しのサラエボ市民にパンを与えない飢餓作戦の一貫として虐殺した。その後も各々が民族勢力圏を拡大する民族浄化により、虐待や虐殺をして、その犠牲者から膨大な難民らが発生した。
