スエズ動乱が、エジプトのナセル大統領がスエズ運河の国有化の宣告した1956年7月26日から勃発した。10月29日にイスラエル軍がシナイ半島に侵攻した。シナイ砂漠ではエジプト軍兵士の死体が散在して放置された。10月31日にイギリス軍とフランス軍は、スエズ運河に侵入し、カイロ周辺を空爆した。11月にはアメリカさらにソ連と中国がエジブトに武力援助を公表した。イギリス軍とフランス軍が12月22日に撤退してスエズ動乱は終結した。
