When the US military landed on the shore from the sea on Tawara, many dead bodies of the Japanese soldiers were scattered around the pacific islands.

太平洋戦争にて、ギルバート諸島のタワラ環礁のベティオ島に1943年11月21日から11月23日に激しい戦闘となった。アメリカ軍は海上から攻撃しながらタワラに上陸した。上陸した海岸には、多くの日本人兵士が戦死した死体が散在した。戦闘でタラワを守備した日本軍兵士は全滅して戦死した。
