第2次世界大戦後に、ヨーロッパからの北アメリカの植民地解放は悲惨な戦闘を伴った。特にアルジェリアでは、フランスに対して1954年11月1日にアルジェリア民族解放戦線(FLN)が独立紛争をした。フランス軍はFLNを撲滅のため、1957年に圧倒的な武力により首都のカスバ掃討を行って多数のアルジェリア人の犠牲者を出した。ド・ゴール復帰政権は1961年1月の国民投票で民族自決となり、アルジェリアが1962年7月1日に独立を正式決定した。
