第2次世界大戦中に、日本軍の1940年からのベトナム進駐による食糧の徴収から、それに対するフランスの植民地政策やアメリカ軍の空襲等から不順な天候で、1944年9月から1945年5月に北ベトナム周辺で大飢饉が発生した。その大飢饉による餓死者の推定は、最大で約200万とも推定されている。あらゆるベトナム市民らの餓死した死体は路上に散乱して集積された。
