第2次世界大戦の北アフリカ戦線が、1940年9月のイタリア軍のエジプト侵攻から、1941年2月からイタリア防衛のためにドイツ軍が参戦した。1943年5月のチュニジア戦から撤退するまで長期に戦闘された。撤退しながらのドイツ軍からの追撃弾の砲撃に被弾したアルジェリア人兵士が戦死した。ラバの死体とともに黄色い穀物が周囲に散乱した。
