沖縄戦において、那覇市から西方に約35kmの座間味島には、アメリが軍は1945年3月22日に上陸して戦闘に入った。日本軍は忠魂碑に住民を集合させて玉砕による全滅の命令を下した。アメリカ軍の砲撃を逃げながら、日本軍は住民に集団自決と強制集団死を強要した。アメリカ軍の座間味島の病院に、集団自決のため喉を掻き切られた子供たちが4月21日に入院していた。
