東ティモールは太平洋戦争後にポルトガルに占領されたが、1975年11月に独立革命戦線(フレテリン)が独立した。それに対抗してインドネシア軍が侵攻をして、1976年7月に占領した。2002年5月20日に国連の主導で独立するまでに、インドネシア軍の侵略において人口の約3分の1の約20万人の住民が絶命した。1983年7月には幼い児童も虐殺された。
