第2次世界大戦にて、日本軍はビルマ(ミャンマー)北方のイラワシ河沿岸都市で飛行場を有するミートキーナを1945年6月に占領した。アメリカ軍・中国国民党軍との激戦で1944年6月9日にはミートキーナに近いジャングル地帯のモウガンにて、膨大な日本軍兵士の死体は打ち捨て放置されて散在した。
