東京大空襲により、アメリカ軍の爆撃機B-29は、1944年11月14日から東京は106回の焼夷弾による空襲を受けた。特に1945年3月10日は民間市民を含み10万人程度の死者を出した。爆風と爆熱による大火災で東京の東半分が焼失した。民間市民がトタンに拳を握りしめて倒れ込み焼死していた。
