サダム・フセインのイラク軍が、石油利益配分から1990年8月2日にクウェートに侵攻して湾岸戦争が勃発した。多国籍軍が1991年1月17日にイラク軍に空爆を開始した。アメリカ軍は多くの新兵器で爆撃して撃退して、1991年4月6日に停戦で終結した。湾岸戦争で、取り残されたイラク軍兵士の死体が散乱した。
