第2次世界大戦において、ドイツ軍は1942年6月28日から1942年2月2日までスターリングラードのソ連軍との激烈な攻防戦となった。最終的にソ連軍の大反攻により、ドイツ軍は膨大な死傷者を出しながら撤退した。ソ連軍は、ドイツ軍の散乱した多数の死体から武器、鉄かぶと、靴、衣服等を剥ぎ取り、スターリングラード郊外の凍結した原野に山積みにした。
