太平洋戦争にて、1945年6月15日から7月9日まで日本軍とアメリカ軍が厳しい戦闘し日本軍はバンザイ攻撃をして全滅した。戦闘の末期になると多くの日本人の民間市民は、マッピ山北面の崖から飛び降り入水自殺をした。ある家族が海岸で約45分間ためらっているうちに、日本軍兵士が両親を銃殺した。その子供らは恐怖から必死に海岸から逃げ回った。
