長崎原子爆弾が炸裂した被爆実態を、長崎市原爆史料保存委員会は1949年に爆死者は約73,900名、傷病行方不明者は約76,800名と推定した。爆心地から東に約600mの長崎医科大学は壊滅的に崩壊した。その玄関の付近で約1ケ月間は経過しても重度に被爆した死体が放置された。熱線や爆風から放射能により爆死してから腐乱して異臭を放ち白骨状態となった。
