日本海軍の潜水艦イ33号が、1944年6月12日に松山市の沖合で訓練中に事故で浸水して沈没した。1958年7月28日に約60mの海底から引揚げ作業がされた。102名の乗務員は窒息し溺死して、電動機室には遺書があった。「気圧が高くなる。息が苦しい。死とはこんなものか。」潜水艦内にて窒息により悶えて苦しんだ冷蔵された若い海兵の遺体があった。
