米軍は1945年4月6日頃から沖縄の首里城の軍司令部を取り囲む日本軍の抵抗にあった。約40日以上の攻防戦の後に、米軍は首里城下にある軍司令部に5月11日から総攻撃を開始した。沖縄戦において首里城の城壁の付近で、米軍により銃殺された日本兵の死体が散乱した。
