第2次世界大戦にて日本軍はビルマ国境の近隣における1944年3月8日から7月10日までのインパール作戦の失敗により甚大な戦死者を出した。補給線を軽視した作戦から敗走した日本軍兵士は、8月9日にタングニ付近で全滅して白骨化した死体で埋め尽くされた「白骨街道」となった。
