リベリアはアメリカの奴隷が解放されて1847年に建国された。元奴隷は全人口の3%程度で先住民族を迫害した。第一次内戦の1989年から1996年で約15万人が戦死した。第2次内戦の2003年から米軍が介入して2005年まで勃発した。その内戦で2003年7月23日には道端に市民兵士らの死体が散乱して、リベリア市民はパニックになり逃避した。
