太平洋戦争の沖縄戦争にて、日本人の全戦没者（軍人・軍属・民間人合計）20万人で、そのうち沖縄民間人の犠牲者は12万人以上と言われる。逃げ場を失った住民、軍と行動を共にした住民は、米軍の無差別な凄惨な戦闘に巻き込まれて、母と子供も一緒に悲劇的な最期を迎えた。
