大英帝国の東インド会社は、インド人兵士が蜂起したセポイの反乱を制圧した。ラクナウの英軍駐屯宮殿に籠城した英国軍は1857年11月18日にセポイの反乱軍を鎮圧した。約2000人のインド人は虐殺された戦死者が世界で初めて写真に撮影された。反乱の鎮圧から東インド会社は解散して英国は直接にインドを支配した。
