日中戦争において、日本軍は中華民国の首都であった南京を1937年12月に占領した。すでに11月に重慶に遷都していたが、南京には一部の中国軍と市民が残留していた。日本軍の新兵は、捕虜にした南京の一部の中国人の残留者に対して、埋葬する塹壕にて銃剣で銃殺する公開処刑をした。
