第1次世界大戦の西部戦線にてイギリスとフランス軍とドイツ軍が1916年7月1日から11月19日までフランス北部でソンムで、近代兵器の戦車・軽機関銃等を投入して双方で約100万人の戦死傷者を出した。その前線のマメッツの塹壕ではドイツ軍が虐殺された。
