アメリカ軍は近代戦史上初の正面から水陸両用戦闘がタワラ島の日本軍から繰り広がる。1943年11月21日から23日にアメリカ軍にも多数の戦死者が出てタワラの惨劇となり、島中の海辺や塹壕の周囲には無数の遺体が散乱して野ざらしとなる。アメリカ軍は1009名の戦死者を出し、日本軍の全員は全滅を覚悟してほぼ全員の4713名が戦死した。
