太平洋戦争の末期に沖縄諸島に1945年3月2日から上陸したアメリカ軍と日本軍との間で、民間人を巻き込んだ沖縄戦争が6月23日まで勃発する。逃げ遅れた多くの民間人が取り残されて戦闘に巻き込まれ多くの弱者である幼児までもが戦死した。
