太平洋戦争においてサイパン島での日本軍とアメリカ軍との激しい戦闘が1994年6月15日から開戦し7月9日に終結する。日本軍は追い詰められて7月9日に全滅する「万歳」突撃をしてほとんど全員が戦死した。青年兵士が7月9日にタナバグ村で万歳突撃で戦死した。北部に退避した民間市民は、バンザイクリフやスーサイドクリフの岬から海に飛び込み自決した。
