太平洋戦争において、タワラ島からマキン島を1943年11月21日から侵攻して、日本軍を全滅した。その後にマーシャル諸島クェゼリン環礁に1944年1月29日から侵攻した。世界最大級の環礁のために、艦艇の留置できて、マリアナ諸島まで侵攻が可能となった。クェゼリン環礁では、土豪に残存する日本軍兵士に対して、アメリカ軍は火炎放射器で焼死させて、多くの焼死体が散乱して全滅した。
