太平洋戦争の本土の最終戦となった沖縄戦が本格的に1945年3月26日より6月23日まで米軍と日本軍で厳しい戦闘となる。両軍と民間人で戦没者は約20万人にも達し4月19日に日本軍兵士の銃殺され腐敗した遺体が放置される。
