ナチス・ドイツは約1200の強制収容所にて強制労働を強要した。1937年7月から1945年4月までブーヘンヴァルト強制収容所ではヨーロッパ全土から囚人の約5万5000人以上が虐殺された。さらにヴァルデマール・ホーフェン医官の命令で、戦争活用のため囚人をウィルス・血清・安楽死等の人体実験もした。人体低体温実験のために囚人が冷水の中に水没される。
