第2次世界大戦にアンデスで1944年12月から1945年1月までの連合国とナチス・ドイツの西部戦線で終局となるバルジ戦闘が勃発する。アメリカ軍の戦死傷者75,522人、イギリス軍の戦死者1,408人、ドイツ軍の戦死傷67,675人の犠牲者に到る。当初のドイツ兵士は優勢時にアメリカ軍からタバコ等を略奪して一服するも、その直後にアメリカ兵士からドイツ兵士は銃殺されて左手の下にタバコを落下した。
