The Japanese army's Kanto Army invaded the area around the old northern gate of Hebei Province in China in March 1933. The Japanese soldiers were exhausted from the forced march up to the Great Wall, and the bodies of the Chinese soldiers were scattered around and rotting.

The Japanese army's Kanto Army invaded and occupied the area of Kubeikou in Hebei Province, China, in March 1933. The Kanto Army was exhausted from one forced march after another. The 32nd Group of the 16th Brigade of the Japanese Army, which had advanced close to the Great Wall, invaded the old northern gate. The exhausted Japanese soldiers lay down and fell asleep immediately after fighting the Chinese Army. The bodies of the Chinese soldiers who had been killed lay scattered around them. The bodies were being attacked by silver flies and rotting.

On March 9th 1933, the Kwantung Army occupied Changshan Pass and continued its advance along the mountainous region. On March 10th 1933, the Kwantung Army approached Jiubeikou. In the early hours of March 12th 1933, the Japanese 8th Field Artillery Aviation Corps arrived near the area of the old northern gate and bombarded the Chinese positions. Japanese infantry and tank units attacked the Chinese army and attacked the old north gate, one of the passes on the Great Wall of China. Japanese tanks advanced towards the old north gate, passing the bodies of dead Chinese soldiers. The battlefield at the old north gate became a tragic battlefield of casualties during the Great Wall of China resistance war.

The Battle of the Old North Gate broke out in 1937, just before the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War, following the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931. With the permission of the Japanese government, the Kanto Army finally launched the Jehol Campaign. On February 25th, the Kanto Army's 6th Division began its campaign and captured Chaoyang. On March 4th, it also captured Chengde, and on March 10th, the Kanto Army's front line reached the Great Wall, and the Great Wall was attacked. The Jehol Campaign itself ended around March 16th. The Kanto Army continued to advance, crossing the Great Wall and extending into Hebei Province, and on May 31st, before reaching Peking, they came to a ceasefire with the Chinese Army. The Kanto Army established a demilitarized zone in eastern Hebei Province. The Chinese Army withdrew from Manchukuo, including the province of Rehe, and the Kanto Army gained a foothold in the Sino-Japanese War through their work to separate North China.
