満州事変が1931年9月18日に勃発して、日本軍の関東軍が、中国東北部の満州を侵略した。満州の荒野にて、関東軍兵士が塹壕に潜伏していた中国軍兵士を軍刀一閃して、断頭して殺害した。中国軍兵士の頸部から壮絶な血煙が放出して死亡した。塹壕の周辺にも、中国人の死体が散乱した。戦争中の軍刀一閃の写真は、関東軍からその撮影の出来が称賛された。読売新聞社の藤沢特派員が、軍刀一閃の瞬間を撮影した。
