第一次世界大戦の西部戦線では、膨大な死体を処理するための墓地を整備した。一時的な木製の十字架が各死体の上に置かれた。第一次大戦後に墓石に置き換えらた。背後には積み上げられた死体を運搬した多数の担架があった。次の死体群は担架に横たえて馬車による運搬を待機した。1916年10月には廃墟となった農村の名称でありギルモンと呼称された。1916年9月3日から6日のギルモンの戦いで虐殺されたオーストラリア軍兵士の男たちがギルモンの荒野に多数の死体群が整列された。1916年10月3日にギルモン村の付近で、戦闘により殺害されて埋葬を待機する連合国軍兵士の若者の死体が墓標とともに横たわった。ギルモンの戦いでは、第一次世界大戦の甚大な犠牲を伴ったソンムの12の戦闘の一つであった。ギルモンの戦いの直後に、北東約1.5kmで9月9日にギンチーの戦いが勃発した。
