朝鮮半島にて、1894年(甲後)に朝鮮人農民が4月に全土にわたる内乱を起こして、甲後戦争が発生した。それに東学の信者が関与して、東学党の乱と別称される。朝鮮の反乱に対して、清国軍と大日本帝国軍が李王朝の援軍として出兵するも、厳しく対立して日清戦争が7月25日から勃発した。日清戦争にて、日本軍が旅順を11月に侵略した時に、旅順の市内と近郊にて、日本軍が清軍の残兵を掃討するために無差別に虐殺した。
