日中戦争において、日本軍は中国の国民党臨時政府が移行した重慶に1938年12月18日から1943年8月23日まで非人道的な無差別爆撃をした。重慶市民は地下壕に逃避して極度の消耗戦に巻き込まれ犠牲者となった。中国市民らは避難壕に直撃弾を受けて爆死した無残な死体を探索した。生き残りの市民らが、集められた死体を見守った。
