日中戦争にて日本軍は1938年1月に山西省中南部への進攻を開始して、山西省、河北省、河南省から北、東、南の三手から中国軍を挟撃した。2月に臨汾と路城平野の各都市を陥落され、山西省は全土を日本軍に制圧された。山西省宗義の付近で中国人兵士が1938年2月に戦死した。日本軍はその写真の公表は厭戦気分を引き起こすため発表不可とした。
