日本軍が1937年12月に中華民国の首都である南京を陥落させた。その後に約2ケ月にわたり、無差別に一部の中国人市民を含めて虐殺した。日本軍は日本刀で首切りで虐殺するのが流行していた。日本軍は首切りされた中国人の犠牲者の数多くの頭部を見せしめのために公開して並べた。
