日中戦争が、1937年7月7日の盧溝橋事件から、中国北部から南部に戦闘が拡大して、中華民国の首都であった南京は1937年12月13日に日本軍に陥落した。日本軍は、規模や内容は不詳であるも、中国軍の捕虜、敗残兵、ゲリラ戦闘員及び南京周辺の一般市民を大量虐殺をした。一部の日本軍兵士は中国人を日本刀で首切りで処刑した。
