シリアは1920年にトルコ帝国が独立したも、フランスが占領統治した。第2次世界大戦中に1940年にフランスが陥落して、1941年にフランス臨時政府に対してシリア共和国が独立を宣言した。独立戦争では 英国と自由政府軍に対する臨時政府軍の友軍間の戦闘でフランス軍兵士らが戦死した。1946年にシリア共和国は独立できた。
