第2次世界大戦でアメリカ空軍とイギリス空軍は1943年7月からドイツのハンブルグに対して無差別爆撃をした。この無差別空襲だけでなく火災旋風に巻き込まれ、主にドイツ人の民間市民の約40,000人以上が死亡して「ドイツのヒロシマ」の悲劇となった。
