第二次世界大戦末期の1945年3月26日から6月23日までの沖縄戦にて、米軍より膨大な砲撃と空襲により、日本陣地は吹き飛んだ。強固であった防空壕も破滅して、米軍は多くの散乱した日本人の死体を検死した。
